Student Mental Health Counselor Position
Position Summary: This is a full time, twelve month position. This position provides a wide range of counseling services to students regarding personal issues and the school environment. Modalities used include individual counseling sessions, crisis intervention, referrals, workshops, group counseling and programming.


Key Job Elements:
1. Provide individual counseling, crisis intervention, outreach and referral services to students. Provide wellness programming and drug and alcohol education to the student community. Be available to faculty, staff and students for consultation, walk-ins and psycho-education regarding student mental health issues.
2. Develop and implement policies that pertain to the physical and/or mental health and safety of the student body. Complete administrative duties as assigned by Director of Counseling.
3. Emergency on call responsibilities: counselor to be available via cell phone after business hours on a rotating schedule.
4. Maintain a current reference bank of available community resources and provide referrals as necessary.
5. Participate in activities that promote the availability of counseling services such as orientations, informal classroom visits, faculty/staff meetings, etc. Facilitate regularly scheduled workshops in order to promote and improve students' professional and personal development.
6. Act as liaison for the school with community service agencies, parents and the academic community.
7. Be involved in various activities and pursuits in order to remain current in the professional field. Participate in college committee activity that is student- focused.
8. Stay apprised of current legal and ethics issues in counseling and higher education.
9. Advocate for the needs of disabled students to the campus community.
10. Follow appropriate budget framework. Maintain current records and complete required reports.


Organizational Relationships:
Reports to the Director of Counseling. The counselor is in a position within the school system requiring working and communicating with all department directors, the executive committee, and faculty and staff on an ongoing basis.


Position Requirements:
1. A Masters degree in counseling, social work or related field
2. An independent license to practice in Massachusetts. License eligible applicants will not be considered.
3. Required: Three to five years of post-degree experience providing mental health counseling. Experience in a post-secondary setting preferred, knowledge of disability issues preferred.
4. Excellent counseling, crisis intervention and interpersonal skills required. Ability to express compassion and flexibility while working with a student population that is diverse in regards to life experiences, gender, sexuality, ethnicity and identity is a must.
5. Must have good organizational and computer skills and be an effective member of a team. An understanding of the intricacies involved in the relationship between the campus environment and student mental health practice would be welcomed.
6. Maintain professional ethics in all areas of counseling conduct.
7. Knowledge of current practices and theories in counseling and higher education. Documented experience working with a full range of issues within the diagnostic spectrum.
8. This position may require some evening and weekend hours.
